Master degree in “Informatica – Computer Science”, Univ. Ca’ Foscari Venezia Italy

Since 2010 the University of Venice has offered an MSc (Master of Science/Laurea Magistrale) degree in “Informatica – Computer Science” taught in English (LM18 – Informatica).
The MSc program takes two years of full-time study, covering a wide spectrum of fields in Computer Science and Information Technology. It is suitable for students with diverse academic backgrounds, such as computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics and related disciplines.

The Curriculum
The course unfolds into three semesters of full-time lectures and lab experience. During the last semester students work on an individual project and dissertation, supervised by a faculty member. The curriculum is organized around two sets of elective courses, from which students have to build their study plan for qualification.

Three study plans, which include specific groups of related elective courses, are suggested:

  • Information Sciences and Intelligent Systems, which covers state-of-the-art techniques in the fields of pattern analysis and data mining, information and knowledge systems, as well as on the various aspects of the design and evaluation of automated intelligent systems.
  • Software Dependability and IT Security, which covers a variety of aspects of software dependability and computer security; it includes workshops on network security, secure programming and software construction to provide the skills required for software development and computer security.
  • Information Systems and Statistical Analysis, which covers various aspects of the design and evaluation of information and knowledge systems, intelligent systems, and data analysis supported by statistical methodologies.

Each student will be tutored by a member of the faculty to create a personalized study plan, which best fits her/his scientific and technological interests, and academic background.

The Final Project
The Final Project is the culmination of the program. The students will work intensively on a topic of her/his choice, while interacting on regular meetings with the project supervisor. The project can consist in the development of innovative software, or the investigation and analysis of existing designs and solutions; the topic can be any area of computer science or statistics. The project will get the student in touch with the most recent and novel research in the field. In several cases these projects lead to a PhD career.

Applying to The Program
To enter the program applicants need to have an equivalent of a three-year Italian undergraduate degree (Laurea) such as a BSc degree in Computer Science or related subject, with good background on fundamental topics in computer science and engineering, such as programming languages and software engineering, algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, databases, and computer networks. Further requirements include basic knowledge of calculus, discrete mathematics, and probability and statistics, foundations of computer science.

How to apply
Applicants with a foreign Bachelor degree

  • Candidates who hold a foreign degree, equivalent to a tree-year
  • Bachelor degree or higher in Computer Science or related subject (Computer/Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, etc.), and are proficient in English, can apply.
  • Such candidates can ask for a pre-evaluation of their qualification and school career before starting the official enrolment procedure.

This pre-evaluation is particularly important for non-EU citizens residing abroad, who have to apply within an early deadline, and then submit a further pre-enrolment application to an Italian Diplomatic Delegation for obtaining an Italian Visa.

Bear in mind that you have to apply for the Foreign Students Evaluation – Second Cycle Degree, and that the exact name of the MSc Program is: “Informatica – Computer Science” (Code=CM9).

Applicants with an Italian Bachelor degree pursued at Ca’ Foscari
Candidates with a degree pursued at Ca’ Foscari, and  who hold all the curriculum requirements concerning the passed exams (see the “requisiti curriculari minimi” form, available in this page ) can simply fill and sign the relative form and go to the offices for enrolling.

For further details about the enrollment procedure, see here .

Applicants with an Italian Bachelor degree pursued at other Universities

To be qualified for enrolling in this MSc program in “Informatica – Computer Science” (Laurea Magistrale – LM-18 Informatica), applicants must own a three-year Laurea degree (DM 270/04 or DM 509/99), or an old four-five year Laurea degree.

In addition, applicants must have passed a number of courses corresponding to at least 24 credits in the sectors of Informatics (INF/01, ING-INF/05), and 12 credits in the sectors of Mathematics/Statistics (MAT/01-09, SECS-S/01, SECS-S/06) and Physics (FIS/01-03).

Since courses are taught in English, a B1 English proficiency level is also required.

Candidates are required to submit the following documents (in English or Italian):

  • a Europass Curriculum Vitae;
  • a degree certificate, including the list of the courses attended with grades, and the final grade;
  • a filled and signed form (see the “requisiti curriculari minimi” form, available in this page), stating the academic curriculum qualification, Candidates with an old (four-five year) Laurea degree (before DM 509/99) are not required to fill in this form.
  • any further documents that might be useful to assess the qualification of the applicant (English proficiency certificate, Diploma Supplement, Work Experience);
  • a photocopy of a valid Identification Document.

Note that applicants who hold an Italian degree in the following 3-year Laurea’s classes (according to DM 270/04 or DM 509/99):

  • L-31 Scienze e tecnologie informatiche
  • 26 Scienze e tecnologie informatiche
